How to Use Telegram Without Sharing Your Phone Number

By 2Phon Team · · 6 min read

Telegram needs a mobile number to sign up, but nobody has to see it. Hide your number, go by a username, and keep your personal line out of Telegram entirely with a second number.

Key takeaways

  • Telegram requires a mobile number to create an account, but it can stay hidden from everyone.
  • Set Phone Number → Nobody in Privacy and Security, and give people a username instead.
  • Hiding doesn't help with people who already have your number saved — they still see it.
  • To keep your personal number out of Telegram entirely, sign up with a real second number and protect the account with a password.

Telegram needs a mobile number to create an account, but you don't have to share it with anyone. Set your phone number to Nobody in Telegram's privacy settings and let people find you by username — or, to keep your personal number out of Telegram altogether, sign up with a second number.

That second option matters more than it sounds. Hiding your number only controls what new people see; anyone who already has your personal number saved will still see it. A second number from an app like 2Phon — a real mobile number on your iPhone, from dozens of countries — receives Telegram's login code and gives Telegram a number nobody else knows.

Below: the exact settings to change, how usernames work, how to set Telegram up on a second number, and how not to lock yourself out later.

Does Telegram really need a phone number?

Yes. Every regular Telegram account is tied to a mobile number. Telegram's own FAQ says: "Telegram accounts can only be connected to a mobile number. We currently don't support landline numbers."

The number is how you log in. Telegram sends a login code to it — and, if you're already signed in somewhere else, it may send the code inside Telegram instead of by SMS. It can also offer a phone call.

There is one exception Telegram built itself: in December 2022 it added a way to sign up "without a SIM card" using what it calls "blockchain-powered anonymous numbers", bought on its Fragment platform (Telegram blog). Telegram presents them as a way to log in to Telegram. They aren't an ordinary phone line, so don't count on one for other apps' codes or for calling people.

Step 1: Hide your phone number in Telegram

Two settings decide who sees your number and who can look you up by it. Telegram's FAQ notes that, by default, your number is visible only to people you've saved as contacts. You can go further.

  1. Open the phone number setting

In Telegram, go to Settings → Privacy and Security → Phone Number.

  2. Set who can see your number

Under Who can see my phone number, choose Nobody. You can add exceptions for specific people.

  3. Set who can find you by your number

Once you pick Nobody, Telegram shows Who can find me by my number. Choose My Contacts, so a stranger who types your number into Telegram can't find your profile.

That gap is why some people go one step further: if Telegram only ever sees a second number, there's nothing personal to leak, even to contacts.

Step 2: Let people reach you by username

A username lets people find and contact you without knowing any number. Set one under Settings → Edit → Username. Share it as a t.me/ link, or show your profile QR code — Telegram's blog notes the QR code lets people add you "without knowing your phone number", even when your number is hidden from everyone.

One trade-off, straight from Telegram's FAQ: people who find you by username "will be able to send you messages, even if they don't know your number." If that's a concern, skip the public username and add people by QR code in person.

Step 3 (optional): Sign up with a second number

This is the only way to keep your personal number out of Telegram completely. It's a good fit if you join large public groups, run a channel, use Telegram for work or selling, or simply don't want Telegram linked to your main line. It's also how you run a second Telegram account next to your personal one.

  1. Get a real second number

Download 2Phon on your iPhone and pick a number. Telegram requires a mobile number, and 2Phon numbers are real mobile numbers, not VoIP or landlines.

  2. Enter it in Telegram

Start sign-up (or tap Add Account in Telegram's settings if you want it next to your existing account) and enter the second number with its country code.

  3. Receive the login code

The code arrives in 2Phon by SMS with a push notification, usually within seconds. If Telegram offers a call instead, your 2Phon number rings and you hear the code — see how voice-call codes work.

  4. Lock it down

Set a username, then apply the Phone Number settings from Step 1. Then turn on a password (next section).

If a code doesn't show up, don't keep tapping resend — work through the verification code troubleshooting guide or contact 2Phon support.

Don't lock yourself out later

Telegram's FAQ warns that losing access to your number can mean losing the account. So protect the account and keep the number:

  • Turn on Two-Step Verification. Go to Settings → Privacy and Security → Two-Step Verification, set a password and add a recovery email. Then a login code alone isn't enough to get in.
  • Keep the number active. A 2Phon number is persistent — yours to keep while your subscription is active. If the subscription ends, the number may be released and later reassigned.
  • Switching numbers? Do it first. Telegram lets you change the number on your account and "keep everything", per its FAQ. Move Telegram to a number you'll keep before letting the old one go.
  • Never share a login code. Telegram's FAQ says codes should never be shared "with anyone, including other services or apps."

For most people the settings alone are enough. If you want Telegram fully separate from your personal life — or one number for Telegram, WhatsApp and other sign-ups — a second number is the cleaner setup. Not sure what kind of number to pick? Virtual vs. real phone numbers explains why apps treat them differently.

Where 2Phon fits

2Phon is an iPhone app that gives you a real second phone number from dozens of countries. For Telegram it does one job well: it receives the login code, by SMS or by call, on a number that isn't yours. The same number also makes and takes real phone calls, and the people you call see your 2Phon number, not your personal one.

It doesn't send text messages — your Telegram chats stay in Telegram. 2Phon is rated 4.8 on the App Store with 30,000+ ratings, and you can start with a free trial; current plans are shown in the app.

In short

Hide your number under Privacy and Security → Phone Number, give out a username, and turn on Two-Step Verification. If you'd rather Telegram never sees your personal number at all, sign up with a real second number and keep it active. For the bigger picture, read how to receive verification codes safely.

Get 2Phon on the App Store — keep your personal number to yourself, with a real second number for codes and calls.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sign up for Telegram without a phone number?

Not with an ordinary account — Telegram's FAQ says accounts can only be connected to a mobile number. Telegram also lets you log in with numbers bought on its Fragment platform. Most people simply use a second mobile number they control.

If I hide my number, can anyone still see it?

Yes — people who already have your number saved in their contacts. Telegram's FAQ notes they will always see it. A second number that only Telegram knows avoids that.

Does Telegram accept a 2Phon number?

Yes. 2Phon numbers are real mobile numbers, not VoIP or landlines, and work with Telegram. The login code arrives in the 2Phon app by SMS, or by an automated call. If a code is slow, see what to do when codes don't arrive.

Can I send SMS from a 2Phon number?

No. 2Phon receives verification codes and makes and takes real calls; it doesn't send text messages. Your Telegram chats and calls happen inside Telegram.
